Mare Island Causeway Bridge Update, October 1, 2026
Safety Notice UPDATE: Mare Island Causeway Bridge Temporary Pedestrian & Bicycle Closure Begins Oct. 5
The City of Vallejo is updating the notice for residents and visitors of a temporary closure of the Mare Island Causeway Bridge to pedestrians and bicyclists from October 5 through October 23, 2026, due to essential bridge‑deck maintenance.
To minimize impacts, the closure will occur Monday through Friday only during the project period.
- Reopens each Friday at approximately 5:15 PM
- Closes each Monday again at approximately 7:00 AM
- Open every Saturday and Sunday
During weekday work hours (7 AM to 5 PM), crews will apply polyester concrete and methacrylate, which are high‑performance materials critical for strengthening and preserving the bridge. These products, however, contain chemicals classified as carcinogenic and can produce strong odors that may cause headaches, nausea, or irritation for individuals nearby. For the safety of all pedestrians and bicyclists, all access on the bridge and the trails beneath it will be closed while work is underway.
The City also advises open‑deck boats to avoid passing under the bridge between 7 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday, throughout the project for the same safety reasons.
Alternative routes for pedestrians and bicyclists include:
- The San Francisco Bay Ferry (Mare Island to Vallejo terminal); their schedule is available at https://www.sfbayferry.com/routes-schedules/vallejo/
- The Highway 37 Napa River Bridge, approximately a 2.6‑mile detour
- People with disabilities are encouraged to visit our City's ADA web page, email ada@cityofvallejo.net, or contact the Public Works Department’s general line (707) 648-5235 for assistance.
All vehicular traffic will remain unaffected, and drivers may continue using the bridge as usual.
The City of Vallejo appreciates the community’s cooperation and understanding as we complete this vital infrastructure upgrade. This work is an important investment in the long‑term safety and reliability of one of Vallejo’s key transportation corridors.
