City Manager's Message for October 29, 2026

Hello Vallejo,

October is coming to a close and November is just around the corner. The shift in weather has brought cooler days and crisp fall evenings. Caltrans and the City’s Public Works Department have been working hard to complete paving projects throughout Vallejo. With nighttime temperatures dropping, Caltrans has switched to daytime paving so the asphalt can cure properly. This may cause some traffic delays in the coming weeks, and we appreciate your patience as we continue improving your driving experience here in Vallejo.

Halloween falls on Saturday this year, and soon the streets will be filled with ghouls, goblins, and costumed adventurers in search of treats. Please remember to keep an eye out for them while traveling through our neighborhoods. GVRD will host its annual Nightmare on Glenn Street trick or treat event at Children’s Wonderland on Friday, October 30. On Saturday the Solano County Fairgrounds will feature the Trunk or Treat Car Show. Both events provide great opportunities for younger residents to enjoy the holiday. There will also be plenty of fun throughout the city for older kids and the young at heart.

Daylight Savings Time ends late Saturday night / early Sunday morning. This is the weekend to fall back which means everyone can enjoy an extra hour of rest after Halloween festivities. The annual Día de Muertos Festival will also take place downtown on Sunday, November 1 beginning at noon.

Tuesday, November 3 is National Voting Day. I encourage everyone to take part in our democratic process and exercise your right to vote. City Hall will serve as both a polling site and a ballot drop location. The site is fully staffed by City of Vallejo employees. Please stop by to vote and say hello.

Many of you may have heard that the Mare Island Bridge is currently unable to open for marine traffic due to a broken coupling. A replacement part is on the way and Public Works expects the bridge to be back to full operation shortly. The City has also released information about White Slough and the planning efforts underway to properly address ongoing concerns at the site. You can read more about both updates in the latest issue of the Vallejo Weekly.

The City Council met this week and voted on several important items. They introduced a new ordinance that will require affordable housing in future development projects within the City. Council also accepted a grant for the Vallejo Fire Department which will fund the purchase of a marine emergency response fireboat. The City will match these funds with revenue from Measure P. This investment will strengthen the community’s ability to respond to emergencies along our shoreline and waterways. The Council also approved the installation of gates on Nebraska Street in front of Vallejo High School to support campus safety. In addition, they approved funding to operate this year’s warming center so that residents in need will have a safe and warm place to go during the winter months.

Stay engaged Vallejo and we will see you in November.

With Appreciation
Harry Black
