How do we give litter the boot?
about 3 years agoWhat ideas do you have to reduce litter and illegal dumping in the City in the following categories?
- Education - What information can we share that can reduce these issues?
- Enforcement - How can we enforce the CA penal code around illegal dumping and deter those that contribute to the litter and dumping situation?
- Collection - What can we do to stay on top of clean-up or make proper disposal of trash the path of least resistance?
- Mitigation - How do we prevent it in the first place?

Recology Vallejo picks up trash in Vallejo so is in and out of the neighborhoods constantly. They have the equipment to pick up trash. Why not sponsor some sort of contest with them to keep their areas clean? Have them submit the areas they clean and have someone from the City select a monthly winner. Just like the residents of Vallejo see the trash constantly as we drive around, so do the employees of Recology Vallejo.

Education - useless. Those doing this are doing so either out of laziness or doing it *purposefully*. I've seen people throw fast food trash right out their car windows. They don't need to be educated; they need to be fined AND made to do community service. Enforcement - Maybe actually enforce litter laws? And make the laws significantly more severe for those caught, including community service for illegal dumpers. Allow dashcam video as evidence. Research illegally dumped trash to try to get evidence of the culprit (e.g. address labels) Collection - outside of the current "give litter the boot" efforts, is there a way for individuals to register with the city to clean up a site and have bags and a disposal method for them so they can do this on their own time? I'm having trouble making the cleanup events this summer. Mitigation - cameras in problem areas. Also, is there a way for citizens to request trash cans? That *may* help those who litter because there's no can nearby.

How about rewarding those who recycle and compost instead of penalizing us, by forcing every household that dosn’t need to have garbage service because they recycle/compost?!
