The birds are currently nesting in the adjacent wetlands, and environmental requirements limit the construction activities that can take place during this period. In coordination with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the City has retained a biologist to monitor the nesting of the birds who will determine when the birds have cleared the area so full operations can resume.
Below is a detailed update on project tasks and overall progress.
Painting of the lift towers is now fully complete. Beginning July 1, 2026, the lift span is operating on its normal schedule with no time restrictions, as directed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Sidewalk installation is moving slowly due to nesting season limitations established by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Additional delays have resulted from issues such as Island Energy cable conflicts, weather, and materials.
Installation of light posts and light poles on the south side of the bridge is complete.
Installation of the bridge logo is rescheduled for September 2026.
Guardrail post installation and handrail painting on the south side are approximately 70 percent complete.
Work beneath the bridge deck and on the deck surface remains ongoing.
At this time, the overall project is approximately 65 percent complete. The projected completion date has shifted from mid-February 2027 to March 2027.
The City will continue providing updates as work progresses.

Here’s where things stand:
- Bridge tower painting: 100% complete
- Fender system painting: 100% complete
- Mare Island logo painting: 100% complete
- Handrail painting: 50% complete
- Guardrail post installation: 60% complete
- Broken pile replacement and bent cap extension: complete
- Work under and on top of the bridge deck: ongoing
- New sidewalk installation: ongoing
- Light pole and lighting installation: 50% complete
Overall, the project is about 60% complete.
Due to weather and material availability delays, the anticipated completion date is now mid‑February 2027.

City of Vallejo Road Repair Project is Underway!
“Your Measure P Tax Dollars at Work”
Big improvements are coming to Vallejo streets, and it’s all thanks to your support of Measure P! The City of Vallejo has kicked off its 2025 Road Repair Project to make our streets smoother, safer, and longer-lasting. We're using a smart, cost-effective method called Cape Seal to refresh and protect our roads for years to come.
What’s Happening and When?
- September: Crews are hard at work prepping the roads — fixing curbs, gutters, and getting the pavement ready.
- October: Early rains in October delayed this project into 2026
- May: The Cape Seal process begins! This two-step treatment strengthens the road and gives it a fresh, clean finish.
- June: The Cape Seal process continues. We expect all work to be wrapped up and your improved roads ready to roll.
In addition to this Cape Seal project, several other road repair projects are picking up speed. The first of these features both ADA-compliant ramp installations and asphalt rehabilitation. The Public Works team is finishing up the concrete work and asphalt paving scheduled to begin in mid 2026.
The second major road rehabilitation project is currently in the design and costing phase. Once finalized, the team will present the plan to the Measure P Committee to secure construction funding and move the project forward.
We will share more on these projects as the details become available.
What is a Cape Seal?
Cape Seal is a two-step road treatment that:
- Extends the life of the pavement by up to 10 years
- Is more cost-effective than full repaving
- Leaves a smooth, clean finish
How It Works:
Step 1: Chip Seal
- A special asphalt mixture is sprayed on the road.
- Then, small gravel chips (about 3/8 inch) are spread on top.
- This layer helps seal cracks and strengthen the road.
You might hear a crunching sound when driving on it — that’s normal!
Please drive slowly during this stage.Step 2: Curing
- The road needs about 7 days to settle.
- Loose gravel will be swept up after curing.
Step 3: Slurry Seal
- A second, smoother layer is applied.
- This seals everything in, fills small cracks, and gives the road a fresh, black finish.
Important:
- Driving on the slurry too soon can damage the surface.
- Loose stones may stick to your car or crack windshields.
- The material can stain driveways and vehicles.
Please follow all posted road closure signs.
Final Step: Opening to Traffic
Once everything is cured, the road will reopen — smoother and stronger than before!

Public Works is beginning work on the HAWK Intersection Improvements at Five Location Project. Construction is anticipated to commence on June 2, 2025 and end on January 31, 2026.
The Project involves work to enhance pedestrian safety at five unsignalized intersections by installing High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacons, construction of ADA curb ramps, removing and replacing curb, gutter, sidewalk; hot-mix asphalt paving; installation of pedestrian barricades; and lowering and raising of existing utilities.
