Vallejo PD Seeks Community Feedback on Proposed Changes to Officer Involved Shooting Policy

The Vallejo Police Department (VPD) is inviting Vallejo residents and stakeholders to provide public comment and feedback on proposed changes to its Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) policy from April 14, 2022 through May 31, 2022.

As part of our three-year collaborative reform agreement with the California Department of Justice, and in response to a third-party assessment with 45 recommendations completed by the OIR Group in 2019, the VPD is restructuring a series of policies to build upon 21st Century policing practices in Vallejo.

“We have a deep necessity to explore the intricacies of our policies, procedures, training, and professionalism to bring about the best in officers, staff and community,” Vallejo Chief of Police Shawny K. Williams stated. “We are in a unique position to impact change together, and I hope that our residents and community members will continue to join us in that effort.”

In 2020, the VPD also partnered with the Solano County District Attorney’s Office to implement a new county-wide fatal incident protocol for officer-involved shootings. The department also introduced a use of force analysis dashboard and other data-driven technology to understand how we use force and to better inform our training decisions. In 2021, use of force incidents decreased by 33% according to Police Strategies, LLC and marked the first time in over 20 years that there were no officer-involved shootings.
