    Mare Island Causeway Bridge Update

City of Vallejo Public Works crews' repairs on Saturday, October 17, for the existing drawbridge imbalance were not successful. During the effort, crews identified an additional mechanical issue. A large metal coupling that helps raise and lower the bridge was found to be broken. Because of this, it is not safe to operate the bridge for marine traffic. The City has notified the Coast Guard, and the bridge will remain unable to open until the coupling is replaced. Vehicle traffic will not be affected.

The coupling is a specialized part and not available off the shelf. The Public Works Department is working to locate a replacement. If one cannot be found, the part will need to be custom fabricated, and we do not yet have a timeline. Once the new coupling is obtained and installed, Public Works will schedule another closure to complete repairs related to the original imbalance.

The City will provide additional updates as soon as more information becomes available.

The temporary closure of the Mare Island Causeway Bridge to pedestrians and bicyclists also remains in place through October 23, 2026, to allow crews to perform essential bridge‑deck maintenance.

Traffic will be moved back to the left (south) side again on either Saturday, October 24, 2026, or Monday, October 26, 2026, if this week’s work is delayed due to rain.

The bridge will reopen to pedestrian and bicyclist traffic on Friday, Oct 23 at approximately 5:15 PM

During weekday work hours (7 AM to 5 PM), crews will apply polyester concrete and methacrylate—high‑performance materials that strengthen and extend the life of the bridge. These products contain chemicals classified as carcinogenic and may produce strong odors that could cause headaches, nausea, or irritation. For the safety of all pedestrians and bicyclists, the bridge and the trails beneath it will remain fully closed while this work is underway.

Alternative routes for pedestrians and bicyclists include:

    • The San Francisco Bay Ferry (Mare Island to Vallejo terminal); their schedule is available at https://www.sfbayferry.com/routes-schedules/vallejo/
    • The Highway 37 Napa River Bridge, approximately a 2.6‑mile detour
    • People with disabilities are encouraged to visit our City's ADA web page, email ada@cityofvallejo.net, or contact the Public Works Department’s general line (707) 648-5235 for assistance.

The City of Vallejo appreciates the community’s understanding and cooperation as we complete this critical infrastructure project. These improvements will help ensure the long‑term safety and reliability of one of our city’s key transportation links.

The Vallejo Public Works Department is excited to announce that major street paving work is about to begin on several key roads throughout the City starting October 6. After a summer of preparing curbs and gutters along the project routes, crews are now ready to move into the final phase: laying down fresh, smooth asphalt.

These early preparations are critical to building long‑lasting streets. Curbs and gutters do more than frame a roadway; they provide the strong concrete edge that keeps asphalt from shifting, cracking, and crumbling under the weight of everyday traffic. They also set the correct slope so rainwater flows safely into storm drains, reducing flooding and protecting the road structure beneath. A tight, clean connection between the asphalt and gutter helps prevent water intrusion that can lead to erosion and major potholes. In addition, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 requires cities to install or upgrade curb ramps to meet ADA standards whenever roadways are repaved or resurfaced. This ensures our infrastructure is more accessible and inclusive with every project.

In short, when the groundwork is done right, Vallejo’s roads stay smoother for longer, and that’s exactly what this project aims to deliver.

This project marks a major investment in the future of Vallejo’s streets. $6.3 million is dedicated to creating smoother, safer routes for our community. And we’re not stopping there. This year, Public Works will deliver a total of $15.3 million in Measure P–funded improvements across the city, pushing forward our commitment to better infrastructure and better mobility for everyone.

Below is the list of streets scheduled for repaving as part of the 2026 project.

Alameda St from Georgia St to Solano Ave

Redwood St from Sonoma Blvd/State Rt 29 to Broadway

Tennessee St from Monterey St to Mariposa St

Tennessee St from Oakwood Ave to Columbus Parkway

Georgia St from Cedar St to Maple Ave

Georgia St from Oakwood Ave to Rollingwood Dr

Georgia St at the intersection of Steffan St

    Mare Island Causeway Bridge Update

Repair work on the Mare Island Causeway Bridge is once again moving at full speed after a temporary slowdown prompted by nearby nesting activity of the California Black Rail, a threatened native species. With the birds’ nesting season now concluded, crews have resumed full operations on the long‑running restoration effort.

The project continues to make steady progress, with several key milestones recently completed:

    • Sidewalk installation is now completed.
    • Work has shifted to the north side of the bridge for Stage 3, where crews have begun guardrail post repairs and installations.
    • Broken bearing plate anchor bolts beneath the bridge deck have been removed and replaced.
    • A new curb ramp has been installed at the west end of the bridge.
    • Installation of the bridge logo is planned for late November or early December.

Repair work on the Mare Island Causeway Bridge has slowed temporarily due to nearby nesting activity from the California Black Rail, a threatened native species. The birds are currently nesting in the adjacent wetlands, and environmental requirements limit the construction activities that can take place during this period. In coordination with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the City has retained a biologist to monitor the nesting of the birds who will determine when the birds have cleared the area so full operations can resume.

Below is a detailed update on project tasks and overall progress.

Installation of light posts and light poles on the south side of the bridge is complete.

Installation of the bridge logo is rescheduled for September 2026.

Guardrail post installation and handrail painting on the south side are approximately 70 percent complete.
